Peopling for Profit provides a comprehensive history of migration to nineteenth-century imperial Brazil focusing on the orchestrated efforts of migrant recruitment, transport to, and settlement in post-independence Brazil.

Suzana Sawyer is a Professor of Anthropology at UC, Davis. Her new book, The Small Matter of Suing Chevron, takes on a legal trilogy. In 2011, an Ecuadorian court issued the world’s largest environmental contamination liability: a $9.5 billion judgment against Chevron.

In this book talk, Dr. Quintana will explore the government-sponsored Bracero Program and the Caribbean guestworker programs of World War II, addressing these government-sponsored farm labor programs as the unexplored consequence of Japanese American incarceration and the New Deal.

The HIA 2023-24 Graduate Students Conference features the work of the recipients of the HIA 2022 Summer Fellowships. Each presentation will have a duration of 20 minutes, followed by 10 minutes of Q&A.

Susy Zepeda is an associate professor in the Chicana/o Studies at UC Davis (Patwin land). Her research and teaching focus on: Xicana Indígena spirit work, decolonization, critical feminist of color collaborative methodologies, oral and visual storytelling, and intergenerational healing.

Alejandro Tortolero Villaseñor is Professor of History and Philosophy at Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana Iztapalapa (México). His research focuses on agrarian history and the economic history of natural resources in México, especially water.
